Mayor For A Day

Today’s Librarian Choose Mayor for a Day for the Best Children’s Book for Year 2000

“In this delightful little caper, Davy is named mayor for a day after winning a soccer match.  He can do anything he wants: decree ice cream for the whole town, close the schools, forbid work!  Davy gives it some thought and comes up with the best idea ever.  When the crowd gathers in the town square, Davy makes his announcement.  There will be one whole day with no rules!  The children rejoice, the adults groan, and chaos ensues.  Finally, even Davy realizes he’s made a mistake.  Soccer is a punching fest without rules.  School is a danger zone.  Speedsters nearly run him over in the street.  When a mob shows up at this door to complain, Davy cheerfully resigns.   Sommer’s tale is upbeat and exciting.  The illustrations are detailed, bright and emphasize characters' expressions—just the kind of drawings most kids like.  Readers at second- and third-grade levels will get a tremendous kick from Davy’s experience—and learn a new appreciation for rules.”

“Mayor for a Day
is a very good story. It is about a boy named Davy who wanted no rules on Monday. When there were no rules everything became really bad...people were yelling at cars that were going too fast, children raced down the hallway at school knocking Davy down, and it was difficult to think because the children were being very naughty. Davy even got hit by a shoe right on the forehead!
“Davy learned that rules are good. They help to keep us out of trouble. I liked the whole entire story. I loved it. Go ahead and buy one of these CDs and books. You will like it too!

Principal Ordered 26 Copies of Mayor For A Day

Northside Elementary is an America’s Choice School.  One of the requirements is that the principal must choose a book of the month.  Peggy Pollock, principal of Northside Elementary, ordered 26 copies of Mayor For A Day, one for each classroom.
Pollock said, “On the month that we were using Mayor For A Day, the words were citizenship, patriotism, loyalty, those types of character ed words.  It just tied in beautifully to our curriculum that we were using for that month.  The children did different activities what they would do if they were mayor for a day.  It was a very big success.”

Other Comments Peggy Pollock made:

“The students loved them very much…”
“It was one of those books that they all came back and said, ‘We just love this book.’”
      “The illustrations are just beautiful.”
“Mayor For A Day has been a great success for our school.”

“What would happen if a town had no rules for an entire day? Chaos, that's what! The cover of Mayor for a Day promises fun times with citizenship, civic virtue, and respect for law and that's exactly what's between the pages of this action-packed storybook….

“Help your children discover what would happen in a place where anything goes, no rules exist, and chaos is the only rule of the day. My son was so worried about little Davy and what would become of him and his hometown that he started telling me why WE have rules in our own household. He even added a few new rules of his own. Any book that can stimulate that kind of respect for the law has a permanent place on our bookshelf.” See: http://www.eho.org/reviews/individualreview.asp?revid=303

When a boy named Davy is chosen "Most Valuable Player" on his junior soccer team, he is also chosen to be mayor for a day in his town. He is so excited to make his day fun, that he announces his day to be a day with no rules!
In the book, "Mayor for a Day," Davy thinks he'll have a great day when everyone in the town goes without any rules. Unfortunately, things get out of hand with no rules and Davy realizes that rules are a very important part of life.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- it teaches children that rules are indeed a very important part of daily life, and that the world cannot operate in an organized manner without them.

“When Davy gets to be mayor of his town, he decides to abolish all rules. Chaos follows and Davy soon regrets his decision. People begin to complain that the madness is Davy’s fault. He apologizes to the crowd, tells his Dad that a family can’t be happy without rules and then resigns. The colorful illustrations by Dick Westbrook are humorous and match the tone of the story.  The goal of the Another Sommer-Time Story Series is to ‘help children understand and follow the virtues that lead to successful living.’ In Mayor for a Day, the focus is on citizenship, civic virtue and respect for the law. A Read-Along CD narrated by the author accompanies the book. Parents would find this character education book useful.

“When Davy, a young boy becomes mayor for a day, he declares a day of ‘no rules.’  He soon learns that we have rules for a reason.  This is a wonderful book that teaches children the importance of values even though they don’t always understand why at the time.  I highly recommend this book.”
